Volunteering

The Karen community in Bendigo is deeply grateful to many people in the wider community who have welcomed us and helped us build new lives here is Australia.

With support from volunteers Karen people have learned English, learned how to navigate Australian culture, learned to drive, applied for jobs, got jobs, rented houses… the list is endless.

Most Karen parents do not have the English-language skills or educational background to support their children with their homework. We cannot begin to express our gratitude to our Australian friends and volunteers in homework clubs who have provided this support.

We are deeply grateful to our Christian volunteers who helped Buddhist refugees, the Buddhist volunteers who helped Christian refugees, and the volunteers who did not have a religion but had lots of compassion and loving-kindness.

We are proud that our volunteers now include younger Karen people who have been to school in Australia and who can help their own people.

Despite this, we still need volunteers from the wider community.
